Chief Chapple retired from the Sheriff's Office in December, 2009, after 34 years of service.

Chief Deputy Chapple was hired as a Correction Officer on October 6, 1975, during the term of Sheriff William A. Hasenauer. After completing the Basic Correctional Academy,Deputy Chapple worked in various assignments, including Housing Unit Officer, Medical Officer, Inmate Visitation Officer, Inmate Grievance Officer, andOfficer in Charge (OIC).

Deputy Chapple was promoted to the rank of Correction Sergeant on September 7, 1978. As a Sergeant he served as a Shift Supervisor on all three shifts, Inmate Disciplinary Hearing Officer, Inmate Housing Unit Representative Liaison Officer, Correction Division Trainer and member of the New York State County Correctional Instructor’s Association. Sergeant Chapple also served as Mental Health Liaison Officer and Department Representative for the New York State Commission of Correction Task Force for Suicide Prevention, and Liaison Officer for the Northeast Law Enforcement and Technology Center at the Rome Laboratory. Sergeant Chapple was also elected to, and served in the position of Vice President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association.

Sheriff Daniel G. Middaugh promoted Sergeant Chapple to the rank of Correction Lieutenant on January 12, 1995. As a Lieutenant he served as the assistant Facility Administrator and Staff Disciplinary Officer. He was a member of the Oneida County Alternatives to Incarceration Committee and he remained active in the Liaison Officer assignments.

Lieutenant Chapple was promoted to the rank of Chief Deputy, and became the first management confidential administrator for the Correction Division, on February 12, 1998. Under Chief Deputy Chapple's direction, many employee initiatives and inmate programs have been brought into the 21st century:
