Derrick A. O'Meara

Biography

Chief Deputy Derrick A. O’Meara was appointed as the Director of the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center at the end of February 2019.

Chief O’Meara and his wife, Susan live along the Black River in Forestport. He was raised in Rome and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1978. He then studied Fine Art as a drawing and painting major at Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute and MVCC.

In 1983, O’Meara joined the ranks of the New York State Police and served as a road patrol Trooper until being promoted in 1993 to the rank of Investigator in the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI). O’Meara was promoted to the rank of Senior Investigator in 2001 and assigned as a supervisor to a field unit of BCI Investigators.

In 2004, he was appointed as the Administrative Senior Investigator for the BCI in Troop D, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the New York State Police BCI in Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Lewis, Herkimer, and Jefferson Counties, supervising 74 Investigators and Senior Investigators and Civilian staff attached to the BCI in that seven County region.

O’Meara served as the Troop D Administrative Senior Investigator until his retirement at the end of 2015. He returned to the law enforcement community in 2017, working part-time for the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office conducting pre-employment background investigations.

Chief O’Meara’s more than 32-year tenure with the New York State Police allowed him to gain a great deal of experience in both criminal and non-criminal investigations, supervision of investigative personnel and civilians, supervision of police investigations, administrative duties, and in fostering inter-agency and multi-disciplinary cooperation throughout Central New York. His two years working part-time with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office afforded him the opportunity to become familiar with the Sheriff’s management philosophy and the policies of his Office. These experiences serve well to have prepared Chief O’Meara for his position at the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center.
