The Correctional Facility Transportation Unit is responsible for the transport of all inmates remanded to the custody of the Sheriff.
The Unit is staffed by over 20 uniformed Correction Officers and supervised by a Sergeant and a Lieutenant. The Unit is deployed as two officer teams, with one team assigned to various shifts to accommodate myriad transport demands.
The teams transport prisoners to and from all courts in Oneida County, including; Utica City Court, Rome City Court, Sherrill City Court, Oneida County Court, and 44 town and village courts. In addition to transport, officers are responsible for custody, control, and security of prisoners while in court and during transportation.
Officers of the unit transport inmates to and from medical appointments, deathbed visits, and funerals. All emergency transports to hospitals, including those in which an ambulance is the transport vehicle, are conducted under the authority and supervision of a transport team.
The Unit transports county inmates who have been sentenced to state prison. Officers transport inmates to Attica, Auburn, Bedford Hills, Elmira, Ulster, Wende, and many other NY State Correctional facilities.
In addition to transport responsibilities, members of the unit conduct contraband searches (shakedowns) and are detailed to other duties as required.
