According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, a 15 year old Oriskany Falls youth had to be rescued from the Hanson Quarry in Oriskany Falls while walking his dogs.

As investigated and reported by Deputy B. Warcup, at about 12:20 PM on 02/12/22, Oriskany Falls Fire Dept. and the Oneida County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the Hanson Quarry located on Rt 12b in the Town of Marshall, for a person stuck in the mud in the quarry. Arriving crews found the father of the youth waiting to direct them into the site where the youth was buried up to his waist in mud and loose dirt and unable to free himself. Crews from Oriskany Falls Fire Dept worked for almost two hours to free the youth and were hampered by becoming mired themselves in the material during the rescue. The youth was walking his dogs at the time and attempted to climb up the pile of material which essentially caused a small landslide. The slide consumed the youth and buried him from the waist down. The youth called his father on his cell phone and his father was able to locate him using a tracking app on the phone. Personnel from Hanson were also on scene to assist and monitor the situation. The quarry was closed at the time of the incident and the perimeter is visibly posted with no trespassing signs. Once freed, the youth was transported out to the road by Fire Dept personnel and transferred to Central Oneida County Ambulance. The youth had minor injuries and slight exposure to the elements and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
