According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol; On January 22, 2019 at about 06:30 AM, Deputies responded to State Route 49 eastbound just East of the Cavanaugh Rd Ramp in the Town of Marcy for a single car motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, Deputies determined that John Chubbock (30), of Rome NY, was operating an orange 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse East on Route 49. Due to icy pavement on the bridge, Chubbock lost control of his vehicle and struck the guide rail on the South side of the roadway causing his vehicle to become disabled across the driving lane. Chubbock’s father, George Chubbock (59), of Rome NY, arrived a short time later and stopped his 2016 Ford F350 in the driving lane with his flashers on behind the Mitsubishi. A 2015 Volkswagen Jetta operated by Justin Houle (22), of Rome NY, then failed to change lanes and struck the rear end of the Ford pickup and then the guide rail on the South side of the roadway also becoming disabled.

A 2013 Jeep Compass operated by Helen Waterman (25), of Blossvale NY, was attempting to slow her vehicle in the passing lane while navigating around the disabled vehicles, and lost control striking the guide rail on the North and then South side of the roadway also becoming disabled.

While deputies were on scene, a 2012 Lincoln MKZ operated by Anthony DeJesus (35), of Rome NY, lost control of his vehicle striking the South shoulder guide rail narrowly missing the Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle and Fire Department emergency vehicle. All parties involved were evaluated on scene with only minor injuries. At this time, no citations have been issued.
