According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, there was a large hay fire on Elmer HIll Rd in the Town of Lee. On 07/10/2019 at about 11:48 PM, a patrol deputy was patrolling in the area of Elmer Hill Rd when he located a large truck hauling hay on fire at the Delta Ave intersection. John Collins , age 38, of Rome, was hauling the hay across Elmer Hill Rd in a 1998 Mack dump truck, when the exhaust from the truck caught the hay on fire. Collins attempted to extinguish the fire but it spread too quickly. Collins then dumped the load of hay into the roadway to save his truck from catching fire. The Lake Delta Fire Dept. responded and extinguished the fire. The Town of Lee Highway Dep.t responded with a front end loader to assist the fire dept. Deputies had the road closed for a little over an hour. Nobody was injured.
