According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol, on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019, at about 7:30 P.M., Deputies responded to Rome New London Road in the Town of Verona for a reported Personal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident. The investigation into the accident determined that Baird A. Kucharek, 51, of Rome, was operating a blue, 2018 Hyundai Elantra, eastbound on Rome New London Road when Kucharek attempted to pass a gray, 2014 Toyota Sequoia towing a trailer, on the left. That vehicle was operated by a Gerard D. Serlin, 47, of Syracuse. Kucharek failed to use caution when passing Serlin as for Serlin began to slow down in an attempt to make a left hand turn into a storage unit facility. As Serlin began his turn, he was struck on the left side of the trailer he was towing and then struck in the driver’s side front quarter panel of his vehicle by Kucharek. Kucharek had two passengers in his vehicle, one passenger, Kya M. Hoffmeister, 16 of Rome, sustained minor injuries in her hip/pelvis area from the impact. Hoffmiester was transported by AmCare ambulance to Rome Memorial Hospital for further evaluation. Baird was issued a citation and he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Verona court at a later date and time. Deputies were assisted on scene by New York State Police, AmCare Ambulance, and New London Fire Department.
