According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol, on Thursday, September 26th, 2019, at about 11:17 P.M., Deputies responded to Trenton Road in the Town of Marcy for a reported Personal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident. The investigation into the accident determined that Robert J. Diegnan, age 24 of Utica, was operating a red, 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, northbound on Trenton Road when Diegnan’s vehicle hit a gravel/dirt patch on the ride hand side of the roadway. The investigation determined that the gravel/dirt patch grabbed ahold of the passenger side tires and pulled the SUV into the eastern shoulder. Diegnan stated that at this point, it was too late to correct the vehicle’s actions causing it to enter into the steep ditch just off the eastern shoulder. The jeep then continued through the ditch until it came to a stop once it collided with a utility pole. Diegnan had two passengers in his vehicle. One passenger, Lindsey M. Meus, age 30 of Rome, sustained injuries in her neck, head, and legs from the impact. Meus was sitting directly next to the driver. Her side of the vehicle is where the utility pole collided with. Utica Fire Ambulance transported her to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for further evaluation. The second passenger, Alexis R. Smithling, age 5 of Oriskany, was seated directly behind the passenger. Smithling sustained no injuries from the incident. Diegnan was issued a citation for moved from lane unsafely and he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Marcy court at a later date and time. Deputies were assisted by Utica Fire Department Ambulance and Maynard Fire Department.
