According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, at 2:26 am on September 28th a Sherrill Police Officer was on patrol and observed a door to a shed open. The officer searched the shed. When he was leaving the shed, he observed a male subject with a hooded sweatshirt in the yard. He ordered the subject to stop. The suspect refused the order and fled. The officer gave chase on foot, at which time according to the officer, the suspect fired a single shot toward the officer. The officer was not struck. He called for assistance. Officers from the Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Oneida PD, Kirkland PD, and Oneida Nation PD responded. A Perimeterwas established. The Regional SWAT team was contacted and responded. The regional SWAT team is comprised of members of the Utica Police Department, New Hartford Police Department, and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was also notified and responded. A thorough search of the neighborhood and the surrounding area was conducted, but the suspect was not located. The investigation is continuing by the Sheriff’s Office assisted by the Sherrill PD. Extra patrols by the Sheriff’s Office and The Sheriff Police Department will remain in the area.
