Fatal Fire Maple Ave Village of Remsen

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol a Fire broke out at 9576 Maple Ave in the Village of Remsen at about 12:43 AM on 12/18/19. When first responders arrived they found two residents outside with severe burns to their heads and arms. Those injured were a Louis Newman, 67, and Amelia Newman 37 who both reside at the house. Information was quickly relayed that there was still a 9 year old boy, Everett Newman, still inside the working structure fire. Both Louis and Amelia were actively trying to rescue the child from the house when fire crews arrived. Louis and Amelia were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with burn injuries.

At approximately 2:18 AM the body of Everett Newman, 9, was recovered from the second floor of the residence shortly before the fire was brought under control by the Fire Department. The Onondaga Medical Examiner Office Responded to the scene, for the fire death investigation. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Identification Unit responded to the scene to determine cause and origin of the fire. As a result of the fire investigation into the cause, the fire is believed to originated from a wood stove on the first floor.

Everett was a fourth Grade student at Remsen Central School.

Remsen Fire Department was assisted at the scene by several other local Fire Departments and Ambulance services.
