According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert M. Maciol an inmate at the Oneida County Jail was charged with Escape 2nd a class E Felony. Inmate Earl Wilkes, 27 of Utica was arraigned in Rome City Court on Friday, January 31st. The incident occurred on January 13th when Wilkes was being transported back to the Oneida County Correctional Facility after a court appearance in Rome City Court on an unrelated charge. While the transport vehicle was traveling southbound on Rome Westmoreland Road in the City of Rome Wilkes popped open a window in the van and opened the rear door. Wilkes jumped out of the transport van but Corrections Officers were able to apprehend Wilkes before he fled the area. Wilkes was evaluated and transported to the hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries by AmCare Ambulance.

Wilkes was arraigned in Rome City Court under the new Bail Reform Law and bail was set at $1. Wilkes is set to appear in Rome City Court at a later date and time.
