MVAPI Rt 31 T/Verona Update

According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol; On February 18, 2020 at about 1125 AM, Deputies responded to Route 31 near the intersection of Beacon Light Rd in the Town of Verona for a reported one car motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, Deputies determined that Anna Newmerzyckyj (58), of Herkimer, NY, was operating a white Kia Optima Southeast on Route 31. Due to unsafe speed and failure to keep right, Newmerzyckyj’s vehicle crossed the opposite lane of traffic and exited the eastern shoulder of the roadway where the vehicle struck a culvert, continued across the driveway striking a fence, and then struck a utility pole before coming to rest. Newmerzyckyj was taken from the scene to St. Luke’s Hospital to be evaluated for rib pain. Newmerzyckyj was issued citations for speed not reasonable and prudent and failure to keep right returnable to Town of Verona court at a later date.

Due to the damage to the utility pole and low hanging power wires, Route 31 was temporarily closed between Beacon Light Rd and the VVS Schools main entrance and traffic was re-routed. As of 1245PM, both lanes of Route 31 have been re-opened.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office were assisted on scene by the Verona Fire Department and Vineall Ambulance.
