The investigation into the accident determined that Justin C. Schmalz, 25 of Dolgeville, was at fault when he was operating his white, 2000 Dodge Ram 3500, eastbound on Sholtz Road. Justin attempted to pass Mary K. Raymond, 72 of Vernon, on the left while Mary was operating her red, 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. Justin failed to use due care when passing Mary as for Mary began to slow down in an attempt to make a left hand turn onto Wentworth Drive. As Mary began her turn, she was struck by Justin on the front, driver’s side bumper. Mary stated that she sustained minor injuries from the heavy impact and was transported via Vineal Ambulance to Oneida City Hospital. Due to where Justin’s vehicle impacted with Mary’s vehicle, it caused Justin’s vehicle to turn and roll. The Dodge Ram came to a stop upright off of the roadway. Due to the vehicle rolling, Justin sustained injuries and was also transported to Oneida City Hospital. Deputies were assisted by Oneida Castle Fire Department.
