According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at about 10:30 P.M., Deputies responded to State Route 26 in the Town of Ava for a reported Personal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident. Investigation determined that BillieJoe Caporilli, age 56, of Rome, NY was operating a 2007 Red Toyota Camry in a Southerly direction on State Route 26 when a horse entered the roadway from the right hand shoulder of the road. Caporilli was unable to avoid a collision with the horse. Caporilli's vehicle struck the horse. The horse died on impact. The front seat passenger in Caporilli's vehicle, Derek Still, age 34 of Ava, NY was injured upon impact and was transported by West Leyden Ambulance to Rome Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Also in Caporilli's vehicle was Katie Still, age 34 of Ava, NY. No other injuries were reported on scene. The horse was removed from the scene by a local resident and brought back to the farm where it had originally came from. Investigation revealed that the horse was in a fenced in area, but somehow had got loose. No tickets have been issued at this time.

The New York State Police, West Leyden Fire Department and West Leyden Ambulance assisted on scene.
