According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on July 24, 2020 at about 11:17 PM, a person reported that they heard a "scraping" sound near the pier and rock wall. The person believed the noise they heard was a boat hitting something. Deputies from the Oneida County Sheriff's Office Road Patrol Division responded to the area for the reported boat accident. Oneida Lake near the pier and rock wall was searched by members from the Sylvan Beach Fire Department, Cleveland Fire Department, South Bay Fire Department, Bridgeport Fire Department, and Onondaga Air One. After a thorough search of the area was conducted, no boat accident or any boat in distress was located.
