According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, there has been an recent increase in the volume of scam calls received by citizens of Oneida County where the caller is identifying themself as a member of the Social Security Administration or the Internal Revenue Service and is attempting to solicit personal information.

Citizens are reminded to never provide anyone who you cannot positively identify, over the telephone or otherwise with your personal information such as your birthdate, your Social Security number, a credit card number or a bank account number.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office has also been advised that callers involved with these scams have occasionally identified themselves as agents of the Oneida County Sheriff's Office and have threatened to arrest those who do not cooperate with the original scam caller.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office does not conduct enforcement action such as this by telephone. If you are contacted by anyone representing themselves as a member of the Oneida County Sheriff's Office and they are threatening to arrest you for not providing your personal information over the phone, please end the call, it is a scam.

It is the goal of the Oneida County Sheriff's Office to keep the public aware of the many types of scams and to provide information which will help keep citizens safe.
