OneidaCountytoHostAdditional CarSeat Safety Events

TheOneida CountyHealth Department and theOneida CountySheriff’sOfficewill behosting morecar seat safety events. The events will take place on:

June 24, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
July 8, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
July 20, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

These events will take place at theDeerfield FireStation in Utica.Carseats will be available to income-qualified candidatesbyappointmentonly. For thosealreadyin possession ofacar seat, a certified technician can beavailable to check that itis installed properly, also by appointment only.

Accordingto theNational HighwayTraffic SafetyAdministration,carcrashes arealeading causeof death for children ages 1 to 13years-old.

“Choosingthe right seat foryourchildand installingit correctly, cangreatlyreducethe risk of injury foryourchild in the eventof acrash,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. “These events provide our residents in need with the proper means to keep their children safe.”

Findingtherightcarseatfora child depends on multiplefactors includingthe child’sage, heightandweight,aswellastheguidelines of the law. TheNew YorkState Department of Motor Vehiclesrequiresanappropriate child safetyrestraintsystemforallchildren until theireighth birthday.It can beachild safetyseat, a harness, a vest or a booster seat attachedwith thevehicle seat belt system, but notthe vehicle seat belt alone. It should not be used in the front seat of thevehicle andmust be rear-facingin vehicles until the ageof two.

To ensurechildren areridingsafely, the OneidaCountyHealthDepartment, alongwith theOneidaCountySheriff’sDepartment, canprovidea freecarseat and thetrainingtoindependentlyinstall thecarseat.

With providing a new car seat, we also educate families on how to make sure their child is properly secured in it,” said Daniel W. Gilmore, Ph.D. MPH, Oneida County Director of Health.

A limited numberof freecarseats will be distributedbyappointment onlyto those parent/guardiandriverswho areeligible.Requirementsinclude:

Meetingincome eligibility – provide proof ofpublic assistance.
Bringingthe child who isin need of thecar seat to the appointment.
o Ifpregnant,babymust beexpected within the nextthree months.
Bringingthe vehicleforthe seat to be installed.
PassingCOVID-19 screeningquestionnaire.
Wearing amask throughout the event.
