According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol, the Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Unit responded to a domestic incident on Germany Road in the Town of Verona just after 01:00 pm on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. It was alleged that the suspect, Joseph Ruggerio (37) of Rome had threatened the female half with a firearm and had also entered her home unlawfully and forcefully stolen her property. As Deputies attempted to take Ruggerio into custody, he fled on foot. During a short foot pursuit, a Deputy was struck in the head by Ruggerio and injured. Both Ruggerio and the Deputy where brought to local hospitals for treatment where they were later released from hospital care.

As a result of the domestic incident, Ruggerio was arrested on the following charges:

Burglary in the Second Degree (Class C Felony)

Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (C Felony)

Robbery in the Third Degree (Class D Felony)

Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree (Class E Felony)

Menacing in the Second Degree (Class A Misdemeanor)

As a result of the altercation with the Deputy, Ruggerio was also charged with:

Assault in the Second Degree (Class D Felony)

Ruggerio was brought to the Law Enforcement Building where he was processed and he is currently being held at the Oneida County Jail awaiting arraignment. Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Deputies were assisted on scene by the Criminal Investigation Unit along with members of the New York State Police and Vineall Ambulance.
