According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol; On September 19, 2021 at about 1210 PM, Deputies responded to Route 5 near Churton Rd in the Town of Vernon for a reported one car motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, Deputies determined that Deondra Skermont (26), of Utica, NY, was operating a red Honda Civic East on Route 5. Due to speed not reasonable and prudent and failure to keep right, Skermont was unable to negotiate the roadway curve and lost control of the vehicle crossing the westbound lane of traffic and exited the North shoulder of the roadway. Skermont’s vehicle struck an earth embankment and a National Grid vent pipe/witness pole, and became airborne. Skermont’s vehicle traveled approximately 100 feet through the air before re-contacting the ground, overturning one-time, and coming to rest upright facing West with damage to the entire vehicle. Witnesses to the accident stated Skermont’s vehicle was observed traveling East on Route 5 through the Village of Vernon in the center turning lane operating at speeds believed to have exceeded 90MPH while passing and nearly striking several vehicles, approximately ½ mile prior to the accident.

Skermont was taken from the scene to St Elizabeth Hospital to be evaluated for head injuries. Skermont was issued citations for Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent, Failure to Keep Right, Reckless Operation, and No Seat Belt returnable to Vernon Town Court at a later date.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office were assisted on scene by Vernon Fire Department, Vineall Ambulance, and the New York State Police.
