According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on May 25, 2022, around 6:30 AM Sheriff's Deputies responded to the area of Wal-Mart located at 5815 Rome Taberg Road in the City of Rome for a reported male with a knife.

Deputies arrived on scene and were flagged down by store employees who pointed out the suspect who was in a vehicle attempting to leave Wal-Mart. Deputies then stopped the vehicle at which time a male matching the description of the possible suspect jumped out of the vehicle. The male then complied with the commands of the Deputies and was detained.

At the completion of the investigation, De'Ante Jones (18) of Rome has been charged with Menacing 2nd ( Class A Misdemeanor) Criminal Possession of A Weapon 4th ( Class A Misdemeanor), and Petit Larceny (Class A Misdemeanor). It was reported that Jones took merchandise from Wal-Mart and went past the last point of sale at which time the merchandise was retrieved by staff. Jones then went back into the store near the checkout counter, pulled a knife on a store worker, and threatened the worker before leaving the store.

Due to current New York State bail reform laws in effect, Jones was released on appearance tickets returnable to Rome City Court at a later day.
