According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, a City of Utica man being housed at the Oneida County Jail was arrested for attacking a Corrections Officer.

At approximately 5:30 PM on March 12, 2023, an Oneida County Corrections Officer, assigned to a Pod Unit, was attempting to serve dinner trays when he was attacked by Tahjer M. Hicks.

During the attack, Hicks punched the Corrections Officer in the face and then threw him to the ground. A request for assistance was initiated and other Correction Officers responded to the Unit and assisted. Hicks was then taken into custody and removed from the Unit. The Officer was then transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for medical treatment where he was eventually released. The Officer sustained a laceration to his face, a chipped tooth, and a fractured left patella. The case was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit for further investigation.

An arrest Warrant and Order to Produce was requested and granted through Whitestown Town Court for Assault in the Second Degree, a class D Felony. Hicks is scheduled to appear at Whitestown Town Court at a later date for arraignment.

The Criminal Investigation Unit was assisted by the Sheriff's Correction Officers, the Sheriff’s Road Patrol Unit, and the Sheriff’s Warrants Unit.
