According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, Milik Burnett, age 25, a New Hartford resident who was being held at the Oneida County Correctional Facility has passed away. Sheriff Maciol reports Burnett was found to be in an altered state by a Corrections Officer shortly after 8:00am as the officer was performing their routine tours. It is believed at this time, that this was the result of an overdose. Medical staff at the facility immediately responded along with the Oriskany Fire Department being called. Corrections Officers and jail medical staff administered Narcan along with other life saving efforts. He was transported by C.O.C.V.A.C. Ambulance to St. Luke’s Medical Center, where he passed away shortly before 11:30am. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office will be performing an autopsy.

According to Maciol, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into this death along with subsequent independent investigations by the NYS Commission of Corrections and the NYS Attorney General’s Office. The Office of Special Investigations within the Attorney General’s Office requires an investigation into the death of anyone who is in the custody of a police or peace officer anywhere in New York State.
