According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, a Utica woman has been arrested in connection with setting a fire at the Oneida County Office Building.

On Wednesday, May 10th at about 4:00 pm, Security Unit Deputies were summoned to smoke coming from the ladies restroom on the first floor.

The fire was found to be in a garbage receptacle and was quickly extinguished by Deputies utilizing a fire extinguisher.

After an investigation by Security Unit Deputies, Maria Cancel, 22, homeless, was located near Steuben Park in Utica and transported to the Sheriff`s Law Enforcement Building and was subsequently charged with Arson 5th degree and Criminal Mischief 4th degree, both misdemeanors. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Utica City Court at a later date.

At no time were any occupants of the building in any danger. The fire damage was contained to the receptacle.

The Sheriff's Office Forensic and Criminal Investigation Units also assisted with the investigation.
