According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on December 14, 2023, at about 0648 AM, Deputies responded to State Route 8 in the Town of Deerfield for a reported personal injury motor vehicle accident involving three vehicles.

Upon arrival, Deputies determined that Alexander Johnson (24), of Hattiesburg, MS, was operating a 2008 Toyota Tacoma North on State Route 8.

Evens Anilus (35) of Randolph, MA, was operating a 2018 Toyota Tacoma traveling North on State Route 8. Richard Garrett (58), of Utica, NY, was operating a 2018 GMC and was traveling South on State Route 8.

Johnson attempted to pass Anilus on the left side of the roadway, while doing so, Johnson lost control of his pickup truck and struck Anilus’s truck on the driver's side, and then struck Garrett’s truck head-on.

State Route 8 was temporarily shut down between Roberts Road and Walker Road while the accident scene was investigated.

Garret and Anilus were transported by Kunkel and Kuyahoora Ambulance to Wynn Hospital for complaints of back and leg pain.

Johnson was issued citations following the accident investigation that are returnable to Deerfield Town Court.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the New York State Police, Deerfield Fire Department, Barneveld Fire Department Kunkel Ambulance, Kuyahoora Ambulance, and State DOT.
