*Update*

The operator of the tractor trailer that was involved in the fatal motor vehicle accident on 12/31/2023 has been identified as Getachew Mengesha, 46 of Rochester, NY. The original news release can be found below.

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol on 12/31/2023 at approximately 6:34 AM Deputies responded to a fatal motor vehicle accident on Route 8 in the Town of Bridgewater involving a Tractor Trailer.

Following the initial investigation by on scene deputies and investigators it was found that the tractor trailer failed to negotiate a curve at the intersection of Route 8 and Pritchard Rd. The tractor trailer then struck a nearby tree, guard rail, and creek embankment before coming to rest partially in the creek. The driver and sole occupant of the tractor trailer was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the driver will not be released at this time due to pending next of kin notification.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Bridgewater Fire Department, Clayville Fire Department, Cassville Fire Department, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Transportation. Route 8 is still closed from Route 20 to Mill St. An update will be sent when the Roadway is reopened.
