The Oneida County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal snowmobile accident that occurred in Stanwix

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol at about 7:00 AM this morning a homeowner in the area of Route 69 and John Street in Stanwix noticed a

snowmobile in a ditch at the intersection of Rt. 69 and John St. When the homeowner walked over to the sled he found an unresponsive male laying next to the sled.

Sheriff's deputies responded and found 55 year old Christian Kukowski of Rome deceased. The Sheriff's snowmobile unit and Sheriff's Investigators were called in. Investigators said that it appears Kukowski was riding alone, westbound on a trail along Rt 69 when he crossed John St. and his sled went down into a ditch. His ski struck a concrete marker causing the sled to spin and threw Kukowski into a utility pole. Investigators believe that the accident occurred sometime after 8:30 PM last night. There were snow squalls in the area throughout the night and investigators say that speed and limited visibility could have been a factor. The investigation is continuing.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Stanwix Heights Fire Department and AmCare Ambulance.

If anyone has any information about the accident they can call Investigators at 315-765-2737.
