According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, a motor vehicle caught on fire following a two car motor vehicle accident on State Route 5 in the Town of Vernon.

On April 6th, 2024 at around 9:44 pm, Deputies were dispatched to the area of State Route 5 in the Town of Vernon regarding an MVA with an occupant still inside of a burning vehicle. Upon arrival, Deputies and bystanders were able to remove the driver of the burning vehicle, Nathan Petrie (Age 44) of Oneida. Subsequent to the investigation, Deputies determined that Petrie suffered a medical emergency while operating a 2023 Subaru SUV. Petrie then moved from his lane into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2015 Toyota SUV being operated by Dennis Galstian (age 19) of Syracuse. Petrie's vehicle then collided with a guide rail before coming to rest. Three juveniles were inside of Petrie's car at the time of the collision and were not injured. Petrie was treated on scene for his medical emergency and no parties were injured from the collision.

A traffic citation was issued to Petrie for the lane violation that is returnable to the Vernon Town Court on a later date.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the New York State Police, Vernon Fire Department, Vineall Ambulance, as well as bystanders on scene.
