According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on May 12, 2024, at about 7:06 p.m., Deputies responded to State Route 28 in the Town of Trenton for a reported two-car personal injury motor vehicle accident involving a deer.

On scene, Deputies determined that Thyme Richey (23) of Phoneix, AZ, was operating a 2024 Toyota SUV Westbound on State Route 28. A deer entered the roadway abruptly, and Richey stuck the deer, causing it to go airborne into oncoming traffic. At the same time, Susan Layton (60) of Ronkonkoma, NY, was traveling Eastbound in a 2013 Chevrolet 4-door sedan. Layton was also unable to avoid the deer while maintaining her lane. The deer caused front-end damage to both vehicles. The vehicles did not come into contact with each other or cause damage to anything else. Both drivers did an excellent job controlling their vehicles and maintaining their lanes of travel.

Richey reported minor leg pains and bruising at the scene but denied medical evaluation.

No citations have been issued.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Shuffelt's Towing & Recovery of Remsen.
