According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol; On March 30th, 2018 at approximately 03:10PM Deputies received several be on the lookout calls for a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on Route 365 in the City of Rome. While Deputies were searching for the vehicle, Rome Fire Department was responding to a separate call when they crested a hill and found themselves head on with a 2003 Toyota Camry traveling northerly on the Southbound lane on Route 26. Rome Fire Department stopped in the road and blocked the Toyota from traveling any further. Deputies were on scene moments later and Rome Fire continued to assist with traffic control during the investigation.

The investigation revealed that Shashikantbhai Patel, 41 of Bel Air, Maryland was operating the Toyota Camry northerly in the Route 26 Southbound lane. Patel was found to be under the influence of alcohol while operating his vehicle and was charged with Aggravated DWI, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and traveling in the wrong direction. Patel was logged in the Oneida County Jail for CAP court arraignment.

The Sheriff’s Office was later contacted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement inquiring about Patel. ICE then issued a detainer warrant holding Patel for deportation from the U.S.
