Sheriff’s Deputies responded this morning to a three car MVA on Route 233 at the intersection with Sutliff Road in the Town of Whitestown. According to Sherriff Robert Maciol, a tractor trailer driven by Thomas Stiles of Christiansburg, Virginia was North bound on State Route 233. As he passed the intersection of Sutliff Road, the trailer he was pulling was struck in the rear passenger side by a pickup truck that had entered the intersection from Sutliff Road. The pickup truck then spun and struck a vehicle driven by Anthony Rocco of Whitesboro. Mr. Rocco was waiting to make a left turn onto Sutliff from Route 233.

The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as Douglas Atkyns, 60 of West Winfield. Mr. Atkyns was deceased at the scene. He was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office.

Neither Stiles or Rocco were injured.

According to witnesses at the scene the tractor trailer driver had a green light.

The New York State Police commercial vehicle unit responded to inspect the tractor trailer. No violations were found.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.

Deputies was assisted at the scene by Oriskany, Westmoreland, and Stanwix Heights Fire Departments as well as Central Oneida County Ambulance.
