According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on December 9, 2018 at about 10:00 A.M. Deputies located the vehicle of a missing person case they working investigating on South James St in the City of Rome. The investigation lead deputies to the area of the canal under the nearby bridge where it was determined someone had entered the water through the thin ice below the bridge. Based on the information developed, the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team responded to the scene for a recovery operation. The victim was successfully recovered from the canal a short time later. This incident is being investigated as a suicide and the victims name will not be released. The Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by the NYSP, ENCON, Oriskany Fire Department Water Rescue Team, Amcare Ambulance and the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office.
