According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol; On May 14, 2018 at about 12:27 PM, Deputies responded to State Route 31 at the intersection of Sarenski Road and Beacon Light Road in the Town of Verona for a reported two car motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, Deputies determined that David Smith (81), of Verona, NY, was operating a dark red Chevy 1500 pickup on Sarenski Road and attempting to cross State Route 31 to Beacon Light Road when Smith failed to yield the right of way after stopping at the stop sign. Smith’s vehicle crossed in front of a white 2013 Subaru sedan operated by Sandra Spies (70), of Verona, NY. Spies' vehicle then struck the passenger side doors of the Chevy pickup causing heavy damage to the car. Smith was treated at the scene for a minor hand injury and released. Spies was taken to Oneida City Hospital to be evaluated for arm, leg, and chest pain. Smith was issued citations returnable to Town of Verona court at a later date.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office were assisted on scene by the Town of Verona Fire Department, Oneida Indian Nation Police, and the New York State Police.
