According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert M. Maciol, on 12/06/2018 at approximately 8:00 AM, a handgun was located just outside the Middle Settlement Academy Campus located at Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES in the Town of New Hartford. School Resource Officers were quickly alerted, the school was placed into a lock-out and the handgun was secured.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit and Deputies from the Road Patrol responded and upon further investigation it was determined that Middle Settlement Academy student, Ka’Shawn Carter brought the handgun to school on the bus. Prior to entering the building he hid the handgun near a water spigot on the building. It was found a short time later by Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES Staff Members. The investigation also revealed that there was no plan to use the handgun at Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES.

Ka’Shawn Carter was transported to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Building where he was arrested for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C Felony and Criminal Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, a class E Felony. Carter will be held at the Oneida County Jail while he awaits arraignment at the Oneida County CAP Court. The investigation is still ongoing.
